Wheeler PTSA General Membership Meeting

Kerry Covington, president, presiding.

Kerry called the meeting to order at 3:57 pm and thanked board members and volunteers for their support this school year. There was a quorum in which to conduct business.

 

Minutes (January 26, 2017)
The minutes are posted on the Wheeler PTSA website, on the bulletin board in the main lobby, and at the door to the cafeteria. There were no changes noted. The minutes were filed for audit.

 

Treasurer’s Report (from Gretchen Buchanan as read by Kerry Covington in her absence)

·         Total expenses: $3,101.81

·         Account Balance from last report dated 1/26/17: $8,095.63

2017-18 PTSA Board Officer Election (Daniel White)
 Daniel White, nominating committee chairperson, read the list of nominees. There were no nominations from the floor. A voice vote was conducted and the 2017-18 Wheeler PTSA board members were elected as follows:

The nominating committee members are Peter Giles, Alisha Hargett, Delitha Morrow Coles, Nadia Reis, Daniel White, and Tina Traylor (Alternate). We thank them for their service on the nominating committee.

 

New Business
Wheeler PTSA celebrated and honored the employees of the year

 

Runner up to TOTY – Nancy Williams

Certified Employee of the Year – Jackie Escott

Teacher of the Year – Vicki Massey

 

Checks and flowers were given to the winners and runner up.

 

Kerry Covington read a proposed new resolution about local control and our bylaws, and it was unanimously approved. View Resolution Here.

 

PTSA recognized all the volunteers that have help this year with all events and projects.  We listed out all our committee chairs and our executive board for special recognition. 

 

PTSA recognized especially Phia Kanyi and Esther Lamothe as PTSA Volunteers of the Year for their work on International Night.

Wheeler PTSA General Membership Meeting
Thursday, January 26, 2017/6 p.m./Performing Arts Center

A quorum was present. Kerry Covington, president, presiding.
Kerry called the meeting to order at 6:24 pm. The colors and pledge of allegiance were presented by the Air Force Jr ROTC prior to this meeting since the SPLOST presentation was shown before our meeting was called to order. Kerry recognized Police Chief Ron Storey and Captain Wayne Pickett as special guests from Cobb County Schools.

Delitha Morrow Coles announced that minutes are posted on the Wheeler PTSA website, on the bulletin board in the main lobby, and in the PAC hallway. There were no changes noted. The minutes were filed for audit.

Budget Amendment (Gretchen Buchanan)
Gretchen Buchanan explained that the Education & Literacy line item needs to increase from $400 to $480 due to an increase in the cost of books. The difference will be paid from the president’s contingency budget. Gretchen moved the budget amendment be approved, and it was.

This report covers the period from August 23, 2016, to January 26, 2017. All transactions noted here are included as part of the unit ledger and are available for review by any PTSA member by requesting through the president. The treasurer’s report was filed for audit.

New Business
Nominating Committee (Kerry Covington)
Our president announced it was time to elect our nominating committee for the 2017-18 school year. Delitha Morrow Coles read Article 6, Section 8 of the Wheeler PTSA Bylaws. Nominations were taken from the floor.  The following nominating committee was elected: Daniel White, Delitha Morrow Coles, Peter Giles, Nadia Reis, and Alisha Hargett. Tina Traylor was elected as an alternate. Kerry Covington appointed Daniel White as temporary chair. The nominating committee will nominate a slate of executive officers for next year.

Bylaw Change (Kerry Covington)
The Georgia PTA Board of Directors approved a change to the local unit bylaws to elect a first VP and second VP, up to no more than 11 VPs. Wheeler typically maintains two VPs called “CO-VPs,” so for Wheeler this change impacts us in title only. The VPs will operate as they have in the past.

President’s Report (Kerry Covington)
Kerry Covington thanked our sponsors, members, and volunteers. She discussed many successful PTSA programs from the fall including Food Truck Night, Elected Officials Reception, and International Night. Thank you to everyone who voted against the Opportunity School District Amendment. Our National School of Excellence survey showed us we need to focus on improving our contact with non-English speaking families. We will survey again in the spring to see if we improved.

Wheeler PTSA Fall General Session
Tuesday, August 23, 2016/6 p.m./Cafeteria

A quorum was present. Kerry Covington, president, presiding.
Kerry Covington called the meeting to order at 6:11 p.m.  Wheeler’s Air Force Jr ROTC presented the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Minutes (Delitha Morrow-Coles)
Delitha Morrow-Coles reported the minutes from the board meeting on April 19, 2016, had been previously posted. There were no corrections. Kerry moved to dispense reading of the minutes. There was no discussion, and the minutes were filed for audit.

Treasurer’s Report (Gretchen Buchanan)
This report covers the period from 4/19/16 to 8/23/16. All transactions noted here are included as part of the unit ledger and are available for review by any PTSA member by requesting through the president.

New Business
Adoption of Annual Audit Report
Gretchen Buchanan presented the Annual Financial Report for the year ended June 30, 2016 were found in correct and good order.  She moved that the audit report be adopted.  The motion was approved, and the audit report was filed for permanent financial record.

Adoption of Annual Budget
Gretchen Buchanan presented the Annual Budget for the 2016-2017 year. She moved that the budget be adopted as presented.  The motion was approved and the budget was adopted.

President’s Report (Kerry Covington)
Kerry Covington thanked our sponsors and our membership. She explained how Wheeler PTSA uses its funds. This year’s theme for our PTSA is “Believe We Can.” She announced some of the awards we received: PTSA National School of Excellence, 1st Place Local Unit for District 9, 3rd Place Local Unit for the State, and Giselle Kurth as the Georgia PTA Birney Butler Outstanding Educator. Kerry detailed multiple ways members can stay involved. She listed several open committee positions.  Finally, Kerry explained a change in our bylaws voted on at the Georgia PTA Convention so the bylaws agree to Georgia law.

Legislative Report
Daniel White provided an overview of Amendment 1, Opportunity School District. Georgia PTA’s opinion is this amendment allows the state to take over “failing schools” at the state level with no governance or local input. The Georgia PTA is against Amendment 1 and encourages everyone to vote against it in November.

Wheeler PTSA Spring General Session

Attendance:  A quorum was present. 

Welcome/Introduction:  Gretchen Buchanan welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm.

Minutes:  Cindy Tuemmler reported the minutes from the board meeting on January 28, 2016, had been previously distributed via email to the board and posted on the PTSA website, bulletin board and cafeteria.  There were no corrections.  The minutes were approved and will be filed for audit.

President’s Report:  
Awards- Wheeler PTSA has received the following membership awards:

  • 16 more members than last year

ECCC PTA Meeting is tomorrow in the Performing Arts Center (PAC).

Nominating Committee Report and Election:
Cindy Tuemmler read:  Sections 1-6 of Article VI of the Local Unit Bylaws.  

Laura White, chair of the nominating committee, was called to read the nominees:

The Board thanked the nominating committee for all their hard work. Asked if there were any further nominees, hearing none the nominations were closed. A vote was taken and all nominees were elected.

Volunteer Appreciation
Token appreciation gifts were distributed by Gretchen Buchanan to volunteers who went above and beyond for PTSA. PTSA volunteer of the year was announced – Daniel White! Cake was shared with all volunteers.

Wheeler PTSA 2nd General Membership Meeting

Welcome / PTSA Call to Order:    Wheeler PTSA President Gretchen Buchanan called the meeting to order at 6:07 PM.  Welcome to the second of our PTA’s General Membership Meetings for the 2015-2016 school year.

Cindy Tuemmler read Article 6, Section 8 of the Wheeler PTSA Bylaws regarding officers and their election. Nominations for the nominating committee were taken from the floor as follows:

President’s Report:

Gretchen Buchanan announced again that Wheeler PTSA was awarded the “National PTA School of Excellence” award.  Gretchen presented a power point which included PTSA Involvement and Upcoming Dates.

PTSA Sponsor:

Chris Bissell presented Sionic Mobile application as a way to fundraise by patronizing local businesses.

Attendance:  A quorum was present.

Welcome / Call to Order / Introduction of Officers:    Wheeler PTSA President Gretchen Buchanan called the meeting to order at 6:15 PM.  Welcome to the first PTSA’s general membership meeting for 2015-2016 year.  Presentation of flag and Pledge of Allegiance presented by Wheeler’s Air Force Junior ROTC.

The executive board has appointed Cindy Tuemmler as Secretary following the resignation of Michelle Zimmerman. Under the bylaws, the executive board may appoint an officer to fill a vacancy. Delitha Morrow Coles was appointed as Parliamentarian.

Minutes:  Cindy Tuemmler reported the minutes from the last general meeting held on April 21, 2015 are posted on the Wheeler PTSA website, on the bulletin board in the main lobby, at Admin 1 and outside the auditorium doors.  There are no additions or corrections. The minutes were filed for audit.

New Business: 
The Annual Financial Report for the year ended 6/30/2015 and the audit of the 2014-2015 school year were completed over the summer and the books were found to be correct and in good order.  The audit report was moved and seconded and voted to be adopted and filed with our permanent records.

The 2015-2016 budget was presented by Hulya Seymour on behalf of the Executive Committee.  She moved that the budget be adopted as presented.  The budget was approved.

President’s Report:
Gretchen Buchanan announced Wheeler PTSA was awarded the “National PTSA School of Excellence” award.  Theme this year is “Celebrate” as there a many things to celebrate at Wheeler this year, the 50th year of Wheeler, new construction being completed and PTSA awards.

Gretchen reviewed the PTSA sponsored competitions are “Reflections" and “Honoring our Heroes” and encouraged everyone to take a look on the website and enter.

Watch for PTSA Facebook posts and PTSA e-Newsletter.

New this year is the PTA website “Membership Toolkit” and encouraged all to join.  Toolkit gives online access to the directory for members, has a calendar, ways you can volunteer, and more.  A e-newsletter is sent to all subscribers.  She encouraged all to go online and set up their contact information.

 Accident Avoidance presentation by PTSA Sponsor:

Jeffery Stillwell gave a presentation about his accident avoidance workshop.  Cost is $285, classes offered on Nov. 18th, 21st & 22nd, includes 5 hour driving session, student must have a learners permit.
